Why Starting Is the Hard Part

Many "productivity" problems look like effort problems, but the hard part is often starting. Once you are three minutes into the writing, the run, or the study session, continuing gets easier. The wall sits between intending to start and actually starting.

Chemists have a name for this: a reaction needs activation energy, an initial push before it can proceed on its own. Behavior often works the same way: the size of that first push can matter more than your motivation that day.

Friction is the first reason starting feels expensive. Behavioral research keeps finding that small changes in ease, cue placement, and setup steps can move behavior more reliably than pep talks or willpower. If the first action is fiddly, the whole task becomes fragile, because your brain has to spend effort before the work has even begun.

Open loops also matter because unfinished work can stay mentally active even when you are trying to look away. The Zeigarnik effect describes how unfinished tasks stay active in memory and create a low hum of tension. Starting a task, even barely, converts a vague "I should" into a live open loop your mind wants to close. That is why the two-minute version can work so well: putting on running shoes is not a run, but it is the move that makes the run more likely.

Starting is only half the problem, because the other half is protecting attention once you are in. Cal Newport popularized deep work, where long, undistracted stretches on cognitively demanding tasks are where much of the real value gets created. Sophie Leroy’s research on attention residue explains why interruption is so costly: when you switch tasks, part of your attention stays stuck on the previous one, so you arrive at the next task already diminished.

That is why "just check one message" can take more than the minute it appears to take. The switch leaves residue, and the residue is the tax. A focused block with one clear target, plus a timer that says "this is the thing for now," keeps more of your attention in one place.

The practical protocol can stay plain enough to remember when you are tired. Name one action rather than the whole project, lower the first step until it feels almost too small, put a boundary around the block, and log the work when you stop so the loop feels closed. If you skip a session, avoid turning it into a whole identity story and simply return before the miss becomes a pattern.

You do not need a perfect two-hour block to make progress. You need to start often, with as little friction as possible, and protect the block once you are in it. Lower the activation energy enough and consistency depends less on discipline.
